Artist's Comments

Yay! It's finished! (Well it doesn't have any finish on it but I'm debating that) I've been working on this for the last 6 days, I've redone the legs and guitar two or three times, spent a long time trying to get it all propped up right in the oven, failed and tried to fix a ton of things in between. And I've spent the last couple of hours painting, gluing and stringing different parts. Fun project over all. It kinda got emotional when I found out 20 minuets into the baking that the figure got messed up. I cried, well actually whimpered.
Uhhh, let's just say he's playing on ice. Yeah, that's it. >><<>>
About the actual character
This is Gary Tibbs, the bass player from the band Adam and the Ants, a band from the 80's. He is also a character in a comic done by :iconhankinstein: In fact, the picture in the background is the picture I worked from. [link]
Great band and great comics.
Yeah, Gary is one of my favorite characters. Though I do have a habit of messing with him a bit.
Big thanks to *hankinstein for advice with the the figure and to my dad who helped out a lot during the baking part.

Wow this was a long artist comments. *yawn* I'm tired. I guess that comes with being up all night.

WOW!!! He looks stellar. And that's an understatement.

It's so wild seeing him all 3-D like. Totally new thing for me, as I have yet to sculpt him myself (I wanna sculpt all of my characters, but as you now well know, it's quite an undertaking just to do one!!)

Did you use wire inside him at all? That helps with the 'slouching' of the figure in the oven. That clay softens up a LOT right at the first of the cooking process and I have had things just collapse into blobs on me several times. Real frustrating (many were ruined permanently) :(

If you do more, try a wire armature or "skeleton" on the inside. I've even wrapped the wire with tinfoil, which also helps strengthen it and saves on clay.

Aw well, I'm yammering to much here. :blahblah: I am not trying to be a know it all, just offering advice. I've had a lot of experience with this stuff. :D It's a LOT of trial and error (heck, I'm preaching to the choir though aren't I) ;)

Anyhow...the pose though--it came out awesome. Ever seen Gary perform? I could totally see him doing this. He's pretty energetic for a bass player (they all kinda usually tend to be kind of static and unexciting... )

Man I can't stop talking about this but I should. Like I said, the Ant fans and Gary himself need to see this and I will see too it that they do.

EXCELLENT work!

Also--did you actually *string* the guitar?? Wow. :O

Woah! Big Comment. :O
I really do like how he came out as well, much better then my other two attempts at making figures.
I did use wires in the legs, neck, and arms. I think I might of put a piece in the torso but I don't think it helped much but then again, I wasn't too willing to redo the torso. I think I could have gotten away with it if I had propped him up better. He was also torso heavy due to having it be a solid mass of red clay. Well, live and learn right.
I actually haven't see him perform yet. I've always been busy with other things and I haven't had the time to check YouTube for stuff like that. (I should fix that soon) Maybe I'll find a way to get that pack, the name is alluding me right now, with all the concerts and music . That would be sweet. (sorry still half asleep)
Man, I'm really excited about the whole you showing him bit. Gah! You have to tell me what he says! Man, I hope he likes it.
And yes, yes I did. Took forever too because I didn't make the pegs tall enough. That and the earring. Gah! That stupid earring! First it broke off then it kept falling on the semi gray carpet every time I tried to tie the string on. I think the tally was up in the 20s. Bloody hard to find too. It was one of those annoying parts. Looks really great though.
Ok, now I'll rambling. Thanks for the great comment! :D

Thanks! I really like it when artists post the progress of something, it really shows how the piece comes to life over the course of the project.
